First of all, I must admit that most people can learn how to cut an opal with a dentist drill. But, it takes a lot more patience than cutting on the wheels and to cut a design is like drawing or painting, you can learn only so much. To get a nice shape and a perfect polish, it will take many, many hours. It is not a skill, it is an art!

The only way to find out is to try. There are two main styles of carving: One can try to make a figure, may it be a frog, a buddha etc. Or, to make the best out of a stone, keep the carats up and give it a nice appaerance. The first way is good for low grade material, and it takes a lot of talent to copy a shape. The second is a way to express abstract art. It does take a lot of knowledge to cut away expensive material just to increase the effect of the pattern.

Both are hard to sell, experience thought me, that carvings with a flat back sell better as they are easier to set. The value compared to free form stones does not increase that much either, unfortunately.

Some stones "ask" to be carved, however you do it, do not think of selling it and just do your best.

Als erstes möchte ich sagen, dass es für die meisten Leute erlernbar ist, einen Opal mit dem Handstück zu Schleifen. Dennoch, die richtige Form zu erhalten, das ist wie bei der Malerei, jeder kann ein Portrait malen, aber es gibt da doch sehr grosse Unterschiede! Hier geht es um die perfekte Politur. Man muss es ausprobieren. Und sich sehr viel Zeit nehmen. Es gibt zwei Arten des Carvings, bei Holz würde man "schnitzen" sagen.Etwas bildlich darzustellen, oder der Form des Steines folgen. Das erstere ist gut mit billigem Opal, das zweite ist eher um ein möglichst hohes Gewicht des Steines zu erhalten. Es ist eine Kunst, teures Material weg zu schleifen um ein Muster zu betonen. Und, dass dann dennoch eine ansprechende Form bleibt.

Beides ist nicht einfach zu verkaufen, der Aufwand ist massiv höher, und dennoch wird der Stein wertmässig wie ein Freiform geschliffener Opal gehandelt. Ein Carving mit flacher Rückseite ist einfacher zu fassen und somit einfacher zu verkaufen.

Einige Opale müssen so geschliffen werden, um den besten Effekt zu erhalten. Am besten, man schaltet einfach ab wenn man bei der Arbeit daran ist. Um des Profites wegen ist noch selten ein Carving gut geraten!
